A Bad Script

I think I might be psychic.
When I first read that DC Public School’s Chancellor, Michelle Rhee had fired the respected principal of the school that her children attend, I said to myself, “She’s going to put in a TFA crony.”
Actually, I’m not really psychic. I just put at a few factors together.
Firstly, Rhee has shown a complete disregard for rules, protocol, human beings or flying insects.
Secondly, the principal was, by most accounts, highly respected and hardworking.
Thirdly, Rhee’s reasons for firing the principal seemed “weak” at best, according to most accounts.
And finally, the most disturbing reason of all is that Rhee represents a growing trend among individuals with power in this country - a flagrant sense of entitlement to do whatever the hell they feel like doing. Somehow, leaders like Michelle Rhee, and Mike Bloomberg and George Bush for that matter, have decided that this country is up for the taking and the rest of us should just suck it up.
I didn’t even have to scroll down the Washington Post article to know that the new principal was a Teach for America alumnus.
I didn’t realize, however, that she is married to the the DC Public Schools Director of Operations. Still, this might have been surprising back when public servants actually followed rules against nepotism, but such ideals are so passé .
Like a badly written script, we just sit back and watch these megalomaniacs take control.
Are we going to say anything before it’s too late?

Good questions. I sort of feel that, by voting up the 05 contract and selling our souls for a pittance, we more or less endorsed precisely what Rhee and Klein are trying to accomplish. It’s remarkable that they do things like this “for the children” and no one bothers to think that the children will grow up and be subject to precisely the same treatment.
